Way Too Hot For April

It is way too hot for this time of the year. Just a week ago highs were in the 40′s and there was snow on the ground. Now today we have nearly reached 80F in Plymouth. I also like that the low was near the freezing mark. So today we had nearly a 45 degree difference in the temperature.

Why is it like this in the spring? Well for one there are warm 850mb temps. The 850 temp for Portland, Maine (KGYX) was 10 degrees C at 12Z (8am this morning). Assuming that a parcel can mix down to the surface today, that calls for a surface temperature of 73.4F . On top of that, there are no leaves on the trees, so all of the incoming radiation reaches the surface, causing it to be a little warmer.

While this weather is a little uncomfortable for my tastes, I do have good news. I was officially accepted into the Plymouth State meteorology graduate program today :)

Flooding Concerns / My Graduate School Fate

Sorry for not posting. This semester has been very stressful for me. Not only do I have numerous assignments for my classes, I also have to start thinking about what I have to do after I graduate.

I have recently found my fate for Graduate Schools:

OU – rejected (found out last week)
NC State – rejected (found out today)
SUNY Albany – wait-listed (found out yesterday)
Plymouth – wait-listed with the good possibility of getting in.

Bad GRE scores and competing with my class here at Plymouth have given me problems. However it appears that I will eventually be accepted into the Plymouth State Applied Meteorology Program. I have really enjoyed being in New Hampshire for 4 years, and I wouldn’t mind staying for another two.

Switching gears to weather, it has gotten warmer in the Plymouth area. With high temperatures ranging from low to mid 50′s since the beginning of the week, the snow has begun to melt (and if you know me, then it’s a depressing time of the year :P ) However with the warm weather comes the possibility of flooding. The image on the right (SOURCE: National Weather Service) shows that the river should rise about 4 feet over the next few days. If we have a very rainy season, we could easily make it to 10 feet which is considered the action stage. I personally want to see a flood before I graduate, because my car isn’t parked in the lot that usually floods :)
