Another half foot expected

February 29th, 2008 No comments

Sorry for not posting this week. It has been quite a busy week. We had a big storm earlier this week that gave the Plymouth area bout 8-10″ of snow. Another system is making it’s way through the area tonight and tomorrow, the NWS has issued a heavy snow warning:

…ANOTHER ROUND OF SNOW EXPECTED TONIGHT AND SATURDAY…

.LOW PRESSURE WILL MOVE EAST FROM THE GREAT LAKES TONIGHT THEN
TRACK TO THE SOUTHWEST MAINE COAST SATURDAY BEFORE HEADING SLOWLY
NORTHEAST TOWARD THE MARITIMES. SNOW WILL SPREAD FROM SOUTHWEST TO
NORTHEAST ACROSS THE REGION TONIGHT BECOMING HEAVY AT TIMES LATE
TONIGHT AND THROUGH MUCH OF THE DAY SATURDAY.

THE SNOW MAY MIX WITH RAIN OVER COASTAL AREAS AND COULD EVEN
CHANGE TO RAIN OVER THE ISLANDS AND ALONG THE IMMEDIATE COASTLINE.
ANY MIX WITH OR CHANGE OVER TO RAIN WOULD CUT DOWN ON TOTAL SNOW
ACCUMULATIONS.

AS THE STORM MOVES INTO THE MARITIMES THE SNOW WILL TAPER OFF FROM
SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST. THE SNOW WILL LAST INTO SATURDAY
NIGHT ACROSS PARTS OF NORTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE AND THE MOUNTAINS
AND FOOTHILLS OF WESTERN MAINE.

Movie of the Year: 2007

February 24th, 2008 1 comment

Since today is the Oscars, it’s time to officially announce the MOVIE OF THE YEAR for 2007.

This was a tough year, here were my nominees:

300
The Simpsons Movie
Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix
Eastern Promises
Transformers

All these movies were very…VERY good. I still need to see No Country For Old Men, and There will be Blood (both nominated for best picture tonight), but I have already made my decision.

In all honesty it was a legit tie between 300 and the Simpsons Movie. Well if you know me, you already know the answer:

300 was really…really good, but can I honestly go AGAINST The Simpsons Movie? Come on now!

Weather posts shall be returning this week, as some interesting systems may show up

Happy Jared Rennie Day Everyone

Six Years ago today I received the Eagle Scout Award, the highest award in the Boys Scouts. On that day the Mayor came by and declared February 16th, 2002 JARED RENNIE DAY. Don’t believe me? Here ya go:

Granted it was only that day, but I still celebrate it every year. So relax, and enjoy this awesome day! Have a Jared-iffic one! :)

GTA IV Widget

Skewing away from weather for a bit, I have to say that I am very excited for the next Grand Theft Auto game: GTA IV to come out on April 29th. Recently the creator of the game, Rockstar, has created a widget to post on websites, I figure that I would post it here cause I am cool like that

More Winter Weather during Winter Carnival

February 12th, 2008 No comments

Tomorrow is the annual Winter Carnival at Plymouth State. It basically means a day off to go skiing at Cannon Mountain for 8 bucks. But it appears to be another Weather day. Storms occurring in the south east today will move up the coast later tonight. According to the latest 12Z MOS, it is suppose to warm up significantly at the 850mb level:

Station: KLCI Lat: 43.57 Lon: -71.42 Elev: 166Initialization Time: 08-02-12 1200 UTCPARAMETER/TIME 024 030 036 042 048 ------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ DAY / HOUR 13/12 13/18 14/00 14/06 14/12------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------TEMPS 2 M (F) 27 36 35 29 19 850 MB (C) -1 5 3 -2 -4 700 MB (C) -4 -3 -2 -5 -8 500 MB (C) -21 -19 -16 -19 -24 1000-500 THCK 541 548 548 540 532

The 850 temps will increase over the next 24 hours, and the thickness will be above the rain-snow line (anything above 540m usually means rain, but it isn’t always the case). It appears that when the system arrives it will first fall as snow, however afterwards significant warming will give most of the New England area freezing rain and sleet. So driving around on the day off could be a hassle

Also look at the 00Z map above. Cyclogenesis could occur over Massachusetts and dump significant precipitation over central and western Mass. But again, temperatures will be too warm to guarantee snow. So I am going with snow -> freezing rain for most of the area
